I started programming as a kid. Once I saw that a computer does exactly what you tell it, I wanted to know how everything on the screen worked, and I still do. That led me to an engineering degree in IT and my first job writing PHP at Develtio, and now I lead the front-end team at TravelTECH. Since 2024 I've also run my own company, JCHS Software.

Senior fullstack developer. I mostly write TypeScript: iOS and Android apps in React Native and Expo, web apps in Next.js and React, and back ends on Node.js or Bun (Fastify, Express.js). At TravelTECH I also write PHP every day (Symfony and an in-house framework), and I use Laravel elsewhere when it fits. I'm always learning something new. Lately it's been publishing apps to the App Store and Google Play and looking after my own homelab.

As Team Leader I do code reviews, mentor mid-level developers and onboard new people. We talk through architecture, testing and accessibility, and on harder problems I pair with them until they can handle it on their own.
// how I think
Before I write any code, I want to know why the business needs the feature. I ask, and I get the team asking too. My favourite part of leading a team is when someone starts thinking about the whole product, not just their own ticket.
// how I work
I use AI coding tools: Claude, Cursor and MCP. They're useful for scaffolding, small refactors, writing tests and checking my own changes. Decisions about architecture and quality are still mine. I always look after accessibility (WCAG), SEO and AEO, web performance and unit tests. AEO (Answer Engine Optimization) is SEO for AI assistants: making sure they can find your content and quote it.
// mobile, end to end
I can take a mobile app from the first commit all the way to the store. I build for iOS and Android in React Native and Expo, set up builds and releases for the App Store and Google Play, and add what a production app needs: Firebase with Firestore, push notifications, OAuth sign-in, in-app payments with Apple Pay, Google Pay and BLIK, content delivery through CDN77 and third-party integrations. I keep the architecture simple so the app stays easy to work on as it grows.
// back-end roots
I started out on the back end. In Laravel and Symfony I built REST APIs, tuned database queries and integrated third-party services. That's where I learned object-oriented design, MVC and design patterns, and I use them the same way in PHP and in TypeScript on Node.js.
// after hours: homelab
My newest hobby is DevOps. In my spare time I built a homelab: a gateway in front of a few virtual machines, a private registry for Podman images, Nginx as a reverse proxy and self-hosted GitHub Actions runners. jchs.software runs on it: every push to main is built into a container, pushed to the registry and deployed.
